Representative Allen West Honored for Service to Seniors

RetireSafe Presents 2011 “Standing Up for America’s Seniors” Award

(Deerfield Beach, Fla.) — RetireSafe, representing 400,000 seniors nationwide, was joined by local senior advocates Monday in honoring Representative Allen West for his efforts to protect the health benefits and security of Florida‘s seniors and disabled citizens.

Thair Philips, CEO of RetireSafe; Maribel Quiala, Southeast Regional Coordinator for the National Latina Health Network and Field Instructor for the Florida International University School of Social Work; and Elizabeth Lugo, President/CEO of the Mae Volen Senior Center in Boca Raton attended the ceremony where West received the RetireSafe Standing Up For America’s Seniors Award recognizing his accomplishments and service to older Americans. The commemorative plaque was awarded at The Renaissance Assisted Living Facility in Deerfield Beach, Fla.

A bipartisan group of Members of Congress are being recognized by RetireSafe on Capitol Hill and in their home districts throughout October and November. These members have acted to protect seniors’ health care benefits, by ensuring access to affordable medications through Medicare Part D, and opposing proposals that threaten to limit access to health care and increase premiums for seniors in the Medicare program.

“It seems Medicare is being attacked from all directions,” said RetireSafe President, Thair Phillips, “Seniors need champions in Washington who are on their side, who aren’t afraid to stand up and preserve the benefits that our older Americans have earned,” he continued. “RetireSafe felt it was time to stop for a moment, rise above the rhetoric, and recognize the Members of Congress who, in many different ways, have worked to protect this lifesaving and essential benefit,” he concluded.

RetireSafe is a nonprofit, nonpartisan grassroots organization that advocates and educates on behalf of America’s seniors on issues regarding Social Security, Medicare, health and financial well-being.

Chaz Stevens Invites Allen West to “Root Beer Summit” Over Deerfield’s Housing Authority

By Matthew Hendley  of Broward Palm Beach.Com

Several months ago, Deerfield Beach Mayor Peggy Noland announced she was getting rid of the entire board of commissioners from the city’s housing authority.

Over concerns that federal taxpayer coin was being wasted in the housing authority, Rep. Allen West hopped on the case and asked the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development Office of the Inspector General to come investigate. HUD is in town looking into the agency, but Noland has failed to follow through on the removal of the board.

That, among a few more possible legal violations alleged against the agency, has led activist Chaz Stevens to invite West to an official “Root Beer Summit.”

Obama had his beer summit,” Stevens writes on his website. “I asked Allen West to come have a Root Beer Summit with me.”

That he did:

Not willing to leave well enough alone, returning back to your well of help, thankful for your previous assistance, and knowing yours to be a crucial voice in my fight for a better community, I invite you to a Root Beer Summit where over cold mugs of A&W a cordial chat can take place about Deerfield’s systemic problems of political corruption, the challenged ethics of our elected local leaders, and possible ways out of this morass.

West’s letter to HUD OIG included a request that they look into “allegations of criminal conduct that may involve nepotism, bid rigging and procurement violations” — one of which Stevens would like to discuss with him.

Power Play Video: Rep. Allen West Not Interested in Debating Perry Hunting Camp Story

Florida Representative Allen West, a Republican backed by Tea Party activists and elected in the 2010 mid-term election, tells Chris Stirewalt he’s not interested in talking about a story involving reports of racist graffiti at a hunting camp Rick Perry’s family once leased.

“We don’t need that type of back and forth in the process… but rather who is the best person to go up against Barack Hussein Obama.”
